Others' in Their Own Land - Film Screening and Panel Discussion
The New Zealand Bahá'í Office of Public Affairs is arranging a special film screening of the documentary 'Others' in Their Own Land, with a panel discussion of Iranian human rights advocates. The film is directed by renowned Iranian-Canadian filmmaker Farid Haerinejad.
The event will be held on Thursday 29 September at Victoria University's Old Government Buildings in central Wellington (see below for more details), and aims to raise awareness of the persecution of the Bahá'ís in Iran.
Friends across Aotearoa are encouraged to invite contacts who work or live in the Wellington region. High attendance will demonstrate to Members of Parliament, and other invited people of influence, that the plight of Bahá'ís in Iran matters greatly and requires official protest.
This must-see film offers personal interviews with Iranian Bahá’ís, and expert interviews with human rights lawyers, activists and scholars, covering more than 40 years of systematic state persecution against the Bahá’í community under the Islamic Republic and the community’s earlier history.
The panellists are Behrouz Boochani, Golriz Ghahraman MP, and Kat Eghdamian with Mava Moayyed as MC. Dr Kat Eghdamian and Ms Mava Moayyed are Bahá’ís whose Iranian families arrived in New Zealand in the 1980s as UNHCR refugees, having been given this official recognition by the UN because of persecution in Iran which continues forty years on, and has recently escalated.

About the Filmmaker:
Farid Haerinejad is a TV producer, journalist, and documentary filmmaker with over 20 years of experience, including working as a staff member at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) for over a decade.
The central theme of his documentaries is social justice and minority rights.
Throughout his career, his accomplishments have been acknowledged internationally by awards and nominations from highly prestigious authorities in the field of television and cinema, including a nomination for the Gemini Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the Silver World Medal Award from New York Film and Television Festivals and Justice Award from Cinema for Peace, Berlin.
About the Panellists and MC:
Behrouz Boochani is a Kurdish-Iranian journalist, former refugee, human rights defender, writer and film producer. He is the author of the award-winning memoir, No Friend But the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison.
Golriz Ghahraman MP is an Iranian-born New Zealand politician, member of Parliament, and author. The former United Nations lawyer was a child asylum seeker, and became the first refugee elected to New Zealand's Parliament.
Dr Kat Eghdamian is a Kurdish-Turkish Iranian writer, speaker, human rights advocate, and former child refugee. Eghdamian is also a Lead Advisor at the New Zealand Human Rights Commission.
Mava Moayyed is an Iranian New Zealander, award-winning investigative journalist and Current Affairs Reporter for TVNZ's Sunday programme.
